DRAW 8.30am
I am organising a match with a difference.
Did you know that as well as carp, Beastie lake at the Decoy complex is stuffed full silvers including barbel, a recent skimmer explosion and a good head of quality roach.
The match will be fished 10.00am to 3.00pm with only silvers to be weighed in. All carp, if caught, need to be put straight back including F1’s.
Once I have the numbers, I will then try and organise a cost effective Xmas meal close by.
It would be great to see members past and present as well as any of your friends if you wish so if you have the mobile number/e mail address let them know!!
I do need to know numbers ASAP. Keith, if you need a lift let me know. Stuart, could you talk to Burug? Pete, would Barry come?

Dun-no-more, Beastie lake, Decoy - 6 July 2011
Sixteen anglers fished this years match which is not a bad attendance but at one stage I had 23 booked in so hopefully more of you will make the effort next year.
A brisk wind was blowing down the lake into pegs 14 to 18 which would
make presentation difficult, Kev pegged it in a way which would provide everyone with a decent peg and not to many sitting in the head wind.
At the start many different methods were being used, shallow, feeder, method feeder, straight lead and pole on the deck. The wind was making it difficult to fish shallow but I started on this method and got of to a steady start on peg 22, Lee sitting comfortably on peg 30 with a dead backer was having a few on the deck but elsewhere it was a quiet start.
From my position I could see Kev was starting to put a few together having switched from the feeder to fishing shallow but it looked like Lee was an early front runner fishing on the deck at 5m.
Other noted anglers were not doing that well, Roop on Peg 9, big T on 11, even bigger Andy G on 18 and Mick King on 29 were getting a few but slipping behind Lee, Ron and Kev.
Coming towards the last hour most angles started to look at their inside lines but it was clear the big fish had not moved in as I could see no one with their elastic being stretched.
Andy on peg 18 really went for it putting handfuls of corn down the edge, unfortunately the fish did not show up until we started to weigh in as we could see the swirls of their large tails directly over the feed.
At the weigh in Martin Parker was the early leader form peg 3, he fished the straight lead and 8mill pellet for 77lb, Maca Campbell on peg 10 had a good day weighing in just over 80lb. Kev W (i think he was on either 14 or 15) took the lead weighing in 88lb, had he counted correctly he would have had 95lb as one of his nets went 57lb but was knocked back to 50lb. The next two were DNW's though they had some fish so then it was my turn.
I thought I had at least 80lb and was very pleased when the total came to 92lb which made me the front runner. I had a mixed bag fishing shallow, when they went I got my head down on the skimmers at 3m fishing corn, these fish averaged two or three to the pound which kept the weight ticking over. Once these fish start to average a pound they will play a very significant part in the match as they can be caught very quickly at close range.
I knew at this stage that Lee had won it as he thought he had around 130lb so my only thraet to 3rd place was Mick King who thought he had about 80lb.
Fortunately for me he weighed 68lb so I was second.
Lee weighed in a tremendous 142lb fishing cat meat on the deck over corn and hemp at 5m so for the second year running he won the match, well done mate, we will have to up our game next year.

4 Island Decoy, 26 June 2011
Eight angles fished the latest Grebe match held on the prolific four island lake at Decoy.
As usual John Boland was late for the draw but luck was on his side and the peg left in for him was the flyer peg 8. Trev drew end peg 10 and it looked good for him as the gentle breeze was blowing into his corner and Ron was on 9 which gave him access to the open water just of the end of an island.
Ron and Weasel started on the pellet waggler and soon had a fish or two while the other anglers all fished to their features and it was not long before every one had a fish. Trev started on the deck using a top four straight out in front of him and straight away he started to get indications that fish were taking the bait on the drop. A change to a shallow rig made all the difference and he was soon bagging and at the distance he was fishing meant he could feed by hand and catch very quickly.
Trev soon opened up a good lead and at this stage it looked like we were all fishing for second place, Ron and Weasel were catching fairly steady on the pellet waggler and on peg 5 Wayne was catching consistently on the deck to the features either side of his peg.
Ron switched to pole shallow to the open water to the right of the island and his catch rate increased which helped him pull away from the chasing pack but at 13m he could not compete with Trev who was still catching well.
The temperate was increasing as the match progressed and the breeze was getting lighter and as it did so Trevs catch rate started to slow down. At this stage he still had a very good lead but Ron was still putting a few together on the pole shallow so the pressure was back on Trev to keep the fish going in to his net.
Weasel was still putting a few together but he had no other options as arriving late meant he only set up the pellet waggler, meanwhile the elastic was still being stretched on Waynes peg.
Trev was still catching at 4m but he was know fishing at half depth and the fish were much smaller. Heading to the final hour Trev still had the lead but it was know coming under threat from Ron who had switched to his two margin swims which had started to produce a good run of fish.
With just over an hour to go Ron and Trev went for their third nets (unbeknown to them Trev had 84 lb 8oz in his two nets and Ron had 76lb 8oz).
On their return both anglers fished the margin swims, Trev was getting bites but struggle to keep the fish out of the reeds and was loosing more than he landed, Ron was fishing tight to the bank and did not suffer this problem as once hooked the fish headed out into open water. Ron had a great last hour catching a good stamp of fish to nearly 5lb and at the whistle he was not sure if he had done enough but he thought it would be close.

Ron won the match in the end by just over 10lb, this was all down to the final hour as he put 33lb in his net with Trev only adding 13lb.
The moral of this match is never give up because on commercials the last hour can be the most productive giving you the opportunity to win.
Next match is the Dun No Moe with twenty anglers booked in it should be a good one.

It was ok if you like catching very small carp!
Ron packed up after an hour and a half as he only had 5 small carp for not even 8oz, he fished corn for the better stamp but there were none at his end of the lake. Trev, to Ron's left, eventually got his head down and fished maggot he ended up with 8lb of them.
At the other end of the lake Dennis was in the hot peg and won the match with 13lb which included one lump. There were a couple of other weights just into double figures which all included one lump, 7 people fished which included two of Dennis’s mates from Benwick.

2010 Season AGM/2011 Pre-season Meeting
This year we are combining the 2010 season AGM with the pre-season for 2011.

Magpie Lake, Pidley, 21 November 2010
9 hardy souls fished the latest Grebe match at Magpie lakes, Pidley.
Out in front with a fine 25lb was Martin Spragg fishing maggot and pellet on the feeder to the island from end peg 12. Weasel who started at least half an hour after everyone else was second with 13lb 4oz fishing similar tactics from peg 11. A big well done to Stewart who finished 3rd from Peg 5 fishing the pole across to the reeds, he weighed in 12lb.
Ron managed 4th place with 9lb 4oz from peg 6 fishing pole on the deck with pinkie and worm, the weights dropped of after that next best was A T Tony with 3lb 14oz, Simon had 2lb 4oz and BIG T had 1lb 14oz. Borag and Wayne did not weigh though both had a few Roach.
Well thats another season nearly done, the championship was wrapped up by Jon Wilson some time ago and it looks like Stewart will win the Handicap Cup, though Keith is still in with a shout.
The Winter cup is still wide open, it is between Ron, Weasel and Jon Wilson, though Martin Spragg could win it if results go his way.

Fur & Feather, 12 Dec 2010 @ Factory Bank
I have booked the fur & feather, it will take place on Factory Bank, Ramsey.
I can here some of you moan but if you dont like it you can book it next year!
On a positive note the place is fishing its tits off, most of the pegs have been dredged out with the depth now up to 5ft, recent matches have been won with 16lb + and you need at least double figures to frame. As always it will be down to the weather so fingers crossed.
Date,Sunday 12th December, draw at 8.45 fish 10 to 3.
15 pegs have been booked and they will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Let me know if you want to bring a guest.
For those members that dont know this venue it is a drain, full of roach, there are more skimmers about this year with the chance of a slab or a decent tench. Pike are sometimes a problem in the early pegs, there is also a chance of a decent perch. If there has been a bit of rain it will be running so bring a selection of rigs.
Worm, and caster for the bigger fish, otherwise groundbait pinkie and mag for the Roach with the possibility of stamp Roach on hemp across.

9 members and 2 guests fished our recent outing across the fen on the idillic Farmshop lake at Dents in Hilgay. Changable conditions and heavy rain in the days leading up to the match often has an impact on this sometimes moody venue. The wind however was relatively warm and brisk which appeared to give the fish the required confidence and enthisiasm to feed.
Simon drew end-ped 16, which was also the Golden Peg. This must have put the kiss of death on it for Simon as he weighed in 2 small carp for just over 3lb. On another day though, had the lumps which seem to reside in the peg have fed, his margin approach would have paid off.
Keith, Weasle and Mike enjoyed a few bites on pegs 12, 13 &14. Stu's weight was enough for 5th in the match and 3 points to add to his league tally. The result could have been much diferent had Stu landed any one of the 5 lumps he hooked.
Ron, fishing on Peg 5 was 4th with 31lb of mainly skimmers caught on worm. Fishing similar tactics, Trev weighed in 32lb from peg 8 although a switch to rudd shallow boosted his wind-effected skimmer catch. John Ellis was the surprise front runner, sat on peg 9 with the wind blowing straight in, John had no choice but to turn to his right and fish straight into the wind. Fishing worm over groundbait he caught skimmers averaging 1.5lb for a total weight of 33lb 10oz. Jonty on peg 6 thought he only had 20-25lb in his net. Alternating between a short caster line and a long wrom/groundbait line he put fish in the net through out the day and, dispite bumping countless better fish on the long line, his total weight of 34lb 6oz was just enought to pip John and win the match.

John Ellis was the surprise front runner, sat on peg 9 with the wind blowing straight in, John had no choice but to turn to his right and fish straight into the wind. Fishing worm over groundbait he caught skimmers averaging 1.5lb for a total weight of 33lb 10oz. Jonty on peg 6 thought he only had 20-25lb in his net. Alternating between a short caster line and a long wrom/groundbait line he put fish in the net through out the day and, dispite bumping countless better fish on the long line, his total weight of 34lb 6oz was just enought to pip John and win the match.

Despite the changable and cold weather in the few days prior to the match, venue regular Ray Sladden stil believed the fish would be shallow. He was proved right as he won the match with 51lb 8oz of carp fishing the bagging waggler. He did feel the close proximity of Martin Spragg feedind the pellet waggler next door did effect his catch rate.
Jonty was 2nd. He fished the method feeder short to start with an nicked a few early fish before switching to the pellet waggler. The sun and ripple made location the "mushy" impossible so he relied on the fish pulling the rod tip round. After a few fish the bites dropped off so he decided to concentrate on the short pole and tempted a dozen or so fish in the last hour. His total weight was 50lb dead.
Martin fished the lond pole shallow with caster for a net mainly consisting of ide to 1.5lb. His hard earned 45lb was enought for 3rd.

Summer League, Fish-off
For the first time since the competition began, there was a tie on points count-back in the Summer League. Both Jonty & Tony tied on 37 points; both having 2 match wins, 1 section win and 2 section seconds each from the 5 counting matches. When there is a tie in this manner a fish-off is to be arranged between the members involved.
Jonty and Tony discussed at length on the date and venue for the fish-off and, as their was only 1lb between them at the club match earlier in the year, they settled on a 4 hour evening match on Snake Lake at Head Fen to suit their respective diaries.
As the lake was empty, Marcus, the venue manager, suggested using pegs 6 & 18.
A coin was tossed and Tony claimed peg 6. He fished pellet shallow for the first part of the match before switching to the margins with pellet/corm over pellet and ended up with 39 fish for 90lb.
By default Jonty was left with peg 18. In the first 2 hours he had 25 fish on punched meat over hemp at 10m. He then switched to the margins for the last 2 hours and had a further 30 fish on either corn or a 6mm expander over loose fed corn and 4mm pellet. His 55 fish went 116lb to win the fish-off, retain the summer league title and, most importantly, relieve Tony of his £1 coin.

Dun-no-more, Beastie Lake, Decoy 14 July 2010
With 159lb, guest Lee Kendall won this years dun-no-more trophy. Fishing from peg 18 Lee started off catching shallow before switching his attentions to target the margins later. Tony fished a blinding match on poeg 23 to weigh 170-odd lb but unfortunately had his weight knocked back to 153lb for exceeding the net limit with one of his net. Please can we make sure net rules are very clear in future to avoid these types of situation occurring in future.
Tony won the club match and bagged 9 points to tie the summer league with Jonty who managed 2nd in section with 109lb. They plan to fish a fish-off at Headfen in the next few weeks.
Martin won the other section to add 7 points to his league position followed by Ron who was 2nd in section.
