Magpie Lake, Pidley, 21 November 2010

9 hardy souls fished the latest Grebe match at Magpie lakes, Pidley.

Out in front with a fine 25lb was Martin Spragg fishing maggot and pellet on the feeder to the island from end peg 12. Weasel who started at least half an hour after everyone else was second with 13lb 4oz fishing similar tactics from peg 11. A big well done to Stewart who finished 3rd from Peg 5 fishing the pole across to the reeds, he weighed in 12lb.

Ron managed 4th place with 9lb 4oz from peg 6 fishing pole on the deck with pinkie and worm, the weights dropped of after that next best was A T Tony with 3lb 14oz, Simon had 2lb 4oz and BIG T had 1lb 14oz. Borag and Wayne did not weigh though both had a few Roach.

Well thats another season nearly done, the championship was wrapped up by Jon Wilson some time ago and it looks like Stewart will win the Handicap Cup, though Keith is still in with a shout.
The Winter cup is still wide open, it is between Ron, Weasel and Jon Wilson, though Martin Spragg could win it if results go his way.

See you at the fur and feather, if you have not done so could you please let me know if you are coming.

Fur & Feather, 12 Dec 2010 @ Factory Bank

I have booked the fur & feather, it will take place on Factory Bank, Ramsey.
I can here some of you moan but if you dont like it you can book it next year!

On a positive note the place is fishing its tits off, most of the pegs have been dredged out with the depth now up to 5ft, recent matches have been won with 16lb + and you need at least double figures to frame. As always it will be down to the weather so fingers crossed.

Date,Sunday 12th December, draw at 8.45 fish 10 to 3.

15 pegs have been booked and they will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Let me know if you want to bring a guest.

For those members that dont know this venue it is a drain, full of roach, there are more skimmers about this year with the chance of a slab or a decent tench. Pike are sometimes a problem in the early pegs, there is also a chance of a decent perch. If there has been a bit of rain it will be running so bring a selection of rigs.

Worm, and caster for the bigger fish, otherwise groundbait pinkie and mag for the Roach with the possibility of stamp Roach on hemp across.

Steve G, you need to send a cheque to Keith Rayment, 27 Princess Street, Ramsey, Cambs, PE26 1JW. Cost 15 pegs at £3.00 = £45.00. Can you email me to let me know you have sent it please.

I will book the Lion at St Marys for the after match dinner so can you let me know if you will be fishing and if you want dinner. I assume the club will be helping towards the cost.

I am not psychic so please reply.

I hope some of you will make the effort to attend, it would be nice to see some faces that have not managed to fish a match this year

I look forward to your replies

Ron

Dents, Farmshop, 3 October 2010

9 members and 2 guests fished our recent outing across the fen on the idillic Farmshop lake at Dents in Hilgay. Changable conditions and heavy rain in the days leading up to the match often has an impact on this sometimes moody venue. The wind however was relatively warm and brisk which appeared to give the fish the required confidence and enthisiasm to feed.

Simon drew end-ped 16, which was also the Golden Peg. This must have put the kiss of death on it for Simon as he weighed in 2 small carp for just over 3lb. On another day though, had the lumps which seem to reside in the peg have fed, his margin approach would have paid off.

Keith, Weasle and Mike enjoyed a few bites on pegs 12, 13 &14. Stu's weight was enough for 5th in the match and 3 points to add to his league tally. The result could have been much diferent had Stu landed any one of the 5 lumps he hooked.

Ron, fishing on Peg 5 was 4th with 31lb of mainly skimmers caught on worm. Fishing similar tactics, Trev weighed in 32lb from peg 8 although a switch to rudd shallow boosted his wind-effected skimmer catch. John Ellis was the surprise front runner, sat on peg 9 with the wind blowing straight in, John had no choice but to turn to his right and fish straight into the wind. Fishing worm over groundbait he caught skimmers averaging 1.5lb for a total weight of 33lb 10oz. Jonty on peg 6 thought he only had 20-25lb in his net. Alternating between a short caster line and a long wrom/groundbait line he put fish in the net through out the day and, dispite bumping countless better fish on the long line, his total weight of 34lb 6oz was just enought to pip John and win the match.

Result

1 - Jonty 34lb 6oz
2 - John 33lb 10oz
3 - Trev 32lb
4 - Ron 31lb

Jonty vs Steve G vs Pete

Final to take place during the club match on 3 October 2010 at Dents Farm Shop.

Fieldsend, 25 September 2010

Despite the changable and cold weather in the few days prior to the match, venue regular Ray Sladden stil believed the fish would be shallow. He was proved right as he won the match with 51lb 8oz of carp fishing the bagging waggler. He did feel the close proximity of Martin Spragg feedind the pellet waggler next door did effect his catch rate.

Jonty was 2nd. He fished the method feeder short to start with an nicked a few early fish before switching to the pellet waggler. The sun and ripple made location the "mushy" impossible so he relied on the fish pulling the rod tip round. After a few fish the bites dropped off so he decided to concentrate on the short pole and tempted a dozen or so fish in the last hour. His total weight was 50lb dead.

Martin fished the lond pole shallow with caster for a net mainly consisting of ide to 1.5lb. His hard earned 45lb was enought for 3rd.

Result

Ray S - 51lb 8oz
Jonty - 50lb
Martin - 45lb

Result

1 - Pete Dighton 14lb 8
2 - Weasel 13lb 9
3 - Ron 13lb 2
4 - Trev 9lb

then the weights dropped off, some pegs really struggled, so much so Steve Goodrum and Martin Sprag dnw.

The rumour is the lake recently had quite a big fish kill, no chub or any bream were caught.

Ron started off well catching the odd odd crucian and decent roach on the worm, Weasel was the first to start whipping but his fish were small. Trev joined in soon after but was not catching as well. After maybe a couple of hours Pete started fishing the whip and his fish were notably of a better stamp with the odd netter.

As the match continued Pete was really getting into them and those who tried to catch up did so too late.

Summer League, Fish-off

For the first time since the competition began, there was a tie on points count-back in the Summer League. Both Jonty & Tony tied on 37 points; both having 2 match wins, 1 section win and 2 section seconds each from the 5 counting matches. When there is a tie in this manner a fish-off is to be arranged between the members involved.

Jonty and Tony discussed at length on the date and venue for the fish-off and, as their was only 1lb between them at the club match earlier in the year, they settled on a 4 hour evening match on Snake Lake at Head Fen to suit their respective diaries.

As the lake was empty, Marcus, the venue manager, suggested using pegs 6 & 18.

A coin was tossed and Tony claimed peg 6. He fished pellet shallow for the first part of the match before switching to the margins with pellet/corm over pellet and ended up with 39 fish for 90lb.

By default Jonty was left with peg 18. In the first 2 hours he had 25 fish on punched meat over hemp at 10m. He then switched to the margins for the last 2 hours and had a further 30 fish on either corn or a 6mm expander over loose fed corn and 4mm pellet. His 55 fish went 116lb to win the fish-off, retain the summer league title and, most importantly, relieve Tony of his £1 coin.

Summer League, Fish-off Result

1st – Jonty, 116lb
2nd – Tony, 90lb

Monday 19 July 2010

Dun-no-more, Beastie Lake, Decoy 14 July 2010

With 159lb, guest Lee Kendall won this years dun-no-more trophy. Fishing from peg 18 Lee started off catching shallow before switching his attentions to target the margins later. Tony fished a blinding match on poeg 23 to weigh 170-odd lb but unfortunately had his weight knocked back to 153lb for exceeding the net limit with one of his net. Please can we make sure net rules are very clear in future to avoid these types of situation occurring in future.

Tony won the club match and bagged 9 points to tie the summer league with Jonty who managed 2nd in section with 109lb. They plan to fish a fish-off at Headfen in the next few weeks.

Martin won the other section to add 7 points to his league position followed by Ron who was 2nd in section.

Thanks to the numerous guests for attending the match.

Monday 5 July 2010

Dents Farm Shop, 4 July 2010

13 members turned out on a warm and breezy day at Hilgay.

In a match where bites were plenty Trev made his draw on peg 26 count with an awesome 100lb 8oz to win his section an the match by some 20-25lb. Fishing his favoured worm over ground bait method he had a slow start but a proportion of the massive head of skimmer which inhabit the lake soon settled over his bait. From then on it was a case of feeding to bites to keep the fish coming in the relatively shallow water. Due to the 1kg ground bait limit, he ran out after 5 hours but the damage was already done. Of this 100lb weight around 80lb was skimmers ranging from 1.5-2lb in weight with the remainder made up of a few small carp, the odd tench and silvers.

2nd place went to Martin Spragg on peg 16. Not having much success fishing for the abundance of smaller fish, Martin decided to sit it out for some of the big carp which reside in and around his peg. 4 carp, including one of 17lb 4oz, made up the bulk of his section winning 77lb 4oz.

A contender for the performance of the day was Tony who drew peg 7. Fishing a long-line rig shallow at top 3 plus 1, Tony caught a fish a chuck all day on worm over loose fed caster. Catching at depths between 12-24 inches deep he caught a real mixed bag with 30-to-the-pound Rudd, 3lb bream and Crucians all making an appearance.

Result

1 - Trev, Peg 26, 100lb 8oz
2 - Martin, Peg 16, 77lb 4oz
3 - Tony, Peg 7, 76lb 4oz
4 - Steve Goodrum, Peg 30, 66lb

Snake lake, Headfen - 20 June 2010

14 members attended our recent outing at Headfen; a turn out lessened by the fact it was Fathers Day.

With a cool wind on the venue all week prior, it was expected that the venue would not fish to it's full potential although the venue manager, Marcus, did predict that 60-70lb would win despite only 37lb winning the club match the day prior.

With the whole lake booked, Marcus selected 14 of the more consistent pegs to be used and the sections were a split down the middle.

In A section, Pete caught a level 30lb from peg 6, fishing long to the far bank or at 11m with corn over hemp for 3rd in section. Trevor sat on Golden peg 12 and caught 16 fish for 33lb for 2nd in section and the default section money. Mike "Gunter" Smalley won the section from peg 16 with 48lb. This was also enough for 3rd overall.

In B section, Ron, on peg 20 battled with the wind on the long pole and alternated between this and the pellet feeder for 26 fish for 30lb. This earnt him 3rd in section and the default section money. Jonty sat on peg 27 where he landed 35 fish for 58lb 9oz. Fishing meat over toss-potted hemp, he caught well in the first part of the match however once the sun came out, he struggled for a bite. He did manage a couple of fish from the margins on pellet late on. Tony, on peg 26 couldn't quite get the hang of the hemp/meat method so decided to plunder the far bank for passing fish. Fishing 8mm pellet he managed to catch a few fish on the long pole.He also caught a few fish in a productive hour fishing the margins. His 25 fish were enough to take the section and the match with an overall weight of 59lb 1oz.

Result

1- Tony, 59lb 1oz
2- Jonty, 58lb 9oz
3 - Gunter, 48lb
4 - Trev, 33lb
=5 - Ron & Pete, both 30lb

Lou's / 4 Island, Decoy, 6 June 2010

16 members turned out to fish this match which had a slightly different format to usuall due to the match being held over two different lakes. This would make for an interesting experience. 8 fished on Lou’s and 8 fished on 4 Island and this was the split in sections.

On 4 Island, Trev come 3rd in section off peg 2. With Peg 1 & 10 out, he had plenty of water to go at however it appeared most of the better fish were in the main part of the lake. He had a busy day trying to feed off swarms of small F1s, carp and tench however the better fish simply didn’t arrive. He weighted in a respectable 78lb. New man Ian drew in-form peg 8, the only ‘open water’ peg on a very secluded, feature packed and some what pretty lake. Ian concentrated fishing paste to the edge of the lilly pads to the right hand side for a weight of 105lb 2oz for 4th over all and 2nd in section. Almost opposite Ian, Jonty sat on Peg 3. Concentrating fishing pellet shallow at 11m, his net of F1’s went 108lb 2oz marginally beating Ian to the section and taking 3rd in the match.

Over on Lou’s Tony’s weight of 116lb was enough for 2nd in section and 2nd in the match. Ron won the section and the match with a superb 123lb. Ron caught the majority of his fish shallow on pellet however a switch to the margins later on proved worth while as he caught a few better fish in the closing stages.

Result

1st – Ron 123lb
2nd – Tony 116lb
3rd – Jonty 108lb
4th – Ian 105lb

Willows, Decoy - 9 May 2010

A cold wind greeted us on a cool day at Decoy Lakes for our lastest club match on Willows Lake. With 15 fishing, Ron was able to peg the match to give everyone some space or a feature to fish to. The sections were split with 8 anlgers on A section, pegs 1-15 and 7 on B section, pegs 16-35.

New man Martin Spragg, on ever consistent peg 25, won B section with 80-odd lb of carp to 4lb. Fishing either the pellet feeder across to a hole in the far bank vegitation, or the pole to the island to his right, he caught consistently throughout the day. Ron was 2nd in the section on Peg 33 with 63lb of feeder caught carp. Our esteemed Minutes Secretary Mike Ingham was 3rd in section. Mike caught on the pole fishing up against the island to his left from peg 28.

In A section, AT Tony drew peg 12 and fished a tidy match to weigh-in nearly 80lb of shallow caught carp and F1s. Tony was frustrated at the weigh in as his first net went 57lb which had to be knocked back to 50lb. Fortunately for Tony, this did not effect the section result. Tony's weight earnt him 4th in section and the default section payout.

The top 3 weights couldn't have been closer with as little as one fish separating them. On Peg 6, Trev alternated between fishing the margins with corn and pellet shallow to amass 98lb which was enough for 3rd in section and 3rd overall. Steve Goodrum, on peg 4, was quick out of the blocks and caught steadilty for the first part of the match, alternating between the pelly wag and the long pole shallow, fish to 3lb plus the odd better sample. However as the day went on bites become fewer and further between, this was not helped by the temperemental wind which had a bearing on the fishes willing ness to feed shallow. Steve's 99lb 8oz earnt him 2nd in section and 2nd overall. After a slow start Jonty, on Peg 1, started to put a few fish together fishing pellet against the island at 11m. Jonty statrted fishing on the deck in aroud 3ft of water but as the day progressed he began to get frustrated with liners and foul hooked fish. The decision to fish shallow on this line was key as the change, coupled with adding some water and mashed expanders to his soft pellets, made the swim come aliive and he couldn't get his bait in the swim quickly enough, fishing an expander at 12-18 inches deep. At the weigh in his total weight of 100lb 14oz was enough to earn Jonty the section and the match.

Result

1st - Jonty Wilson 100lb 14oz
2nd - Steve Goodrum 99lb 8oz
3rd - Trev Dew 98lb
4th - Martin Spragg

Match Report - Magpie Lake, Pidley 18 April 2010

A great turn out of 19 members attended the first match of the campaign at Rookery Waters. Magpie lake was the venue and with reports from those who had been down in the week previous, spirits were high and a good match was hoped for. Whilst the weather was improving, the water was still chilly so a more cautious approach may need to be considered, with a pellet approach suggested to be a good choice by those who practiced.

The match was pegged on pegs 1 – 20 with peg 15 left out as it is pretty tight in that corner with anglers on 13 & 14. The match was split into 2 sections. Pegs 1-10 in A section and 11-20 in B section.

The sun shone all day with a light to moderate wind blowing into pegs 15-20. Although the conditions seemed reasonable for a good days sport, the fishing was really quite hard. Probably due to the time of year, a slight ground frost first thing and the fact the water is still yet to warm up significantly. This is not surprising since it has only been 6-8 week since the winter snow disappeared.

On peg 8, Steve “The Pheonix” Goodrum fished pellet shallow for 34lb 8oz. With the ripple on the other side of the lake the fishing was difficult and at 13m he did find it cosy with Pete next door on that bend. His weight was hard earned and enough for 3rd place.

This could have been different had the bailiff not asked Steve to stop fishing the Pellet Wallger saying it has been band, only for us to discover it is the Bagging Waggler that is not allowed on Magpie and the Pellet Waggler is an acceptable method to use. There seems to be some frustrating confusuion between the venue rules and the bailiff's understanding of them. The owner has apologised for the confusion.

Tony “AT Tony” Grigorjevs drew peg 19 and he also had to work for his 35lb 4oz of carp to 4lb. Fishing at 16m towards the vacant peg opposite, Tony fished on the far bank slope in around 3ft of water, with most of his fish falling to corn over small pots of pellet and corn.

Jon “Jonty” Wilson drew peg 2. In the first hour he had 2 fish in the net lost 2 fishing at 11m on the deck with expander over pellet at the bottom of the slope of the sunken island at the left hand extremity of his swim. All the time he fed 4mm hard pellets little and often at 11m to his right in the only ‘open’ water he had. With no further indications on the deck, a switch to the shallow line proved decisive. It was by no means hectic but he slowly began to put a few fish in his net and ended up with 49lb 10oz to win the section and the match.

Result

1st – Jonty 49lb 10oz
2nd – AT Tony 35lb 4oz
3rd – Steve Goodrum 34lb 8oz

Club Rules - A reminder

1 Wherever possible, the match calendar will be booked twelve months in advance allowing all members to have their say in selection. The fixture list will include the draw times.

2 To ensure good venues, peg numbers must be given at the booking stage. Experience has shown that 20 pegs is sufficient however, if more than 20 anglers turn up and extra pegs are not available preference will be given to fully paid up members when extra pegs cannot be arranged on the day.

3 Late arrivals will be included in the draw providing they have contacted any of the club officials or members on the morning of the match.

4 Members arriving after the draw has taken place and have not contacted the club will not be eligible to fish.

5 All members must weigh in their catch.

6 No Pike, Zander, Trout or Salmon to count in matches.

7 No Bloodworm and Joker to be allowed.

8 Guests are not allowed to fish any grebe match unless otherwise agreed.

9 The use of mobile phones during matches is discouraged.

11No bank runners allowed.

10 Anglers can leave their pegs at any time provided all lines are removed from the water. Care should be taken to avoid damage to the tackle of others and to keep disturbance to other angler’s swims to a minimum .

12 No artificial baits are to be used during any club match.

13 Draw times as per those stated on fixture list

14 ALL VENUE RULES MUST BE OBEYED. The match secretary will recap the rules before the draw.

15 In the event of a tie the points will be added up and split between the anglers concerned.
e.g. If the winner and runner up of a section tie the points normally awarded would be 7 and 6 giving a total of 13 which equates to 6.5 each. If these were the top weights on the day each angler would get an additional point each.

16 In the event of a tie at the end of a season the league winner will be decided on outright wins, then section wins, and then section runners up etc. If an angler wins a match but ties on weight with someone else then this will be counted as a win. The same applies for section wins etc. In the unusual event of it being a tie all through the counting matches then a fish off will have to be arranged.

Any angler found breaking the club rules would be disqualified from that match, taken around the corner and handed over to Dennis who will dish out some severe punishment. You have been warned!

Supercup 2010, Round 1 Result

Unfortunately we failed to progress in this years competition. We were well beaten by a strong and well rehursed JV Thorney A side who took the tie by 6 sections to two. Had it have been a tie on section points, JV would have also have won on aggregate weight.

It was a low weight affair with a well earned level 20lb enough for victory. It was pleaseing however that evreyone caught a few fish after the difficult practices we experienced.

Team result:

JV Thorney A 10 pts
Grebe AC 14 pts

The team captain would like to thank the squad and club members who helped practise and formulate and plan and the team members for trying their best on the day.

The club would like to wish JV 'A' all the best in the remainder of the competition.

The Black Bull has closed, its a long story, and its unlikely to reopen for at least 8 weeks.
